Annual Reports

August 16, 2012

Dear Parents and Community Members:
We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2011-2012 educational progress for the New Groningen Elementary. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mrs. Laurie Poll, New Groningen principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically. Or, you may review a copy in our school office.

For 2011-2012, New Groningen made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

Information used to rank schools is based on the development of the Top to Bottom list of schools and their performance. Each school’s Top to Bottom ranking will be based on student achievement, student growth over time, school improvement over time and achievement gaps across all five tested subjects (mathematics, reading, science, social studies and writing). New Groningen scored in the 56th percentile in the Top to Bottom rankings for the 2011-12 school year.

Process for assigning pupils to the school – Students in Zeeland are assigned based upon their geographical home location. Zeeland also offers school of choice openings which are placed after the residents of Zeeland are assigned to their home school. There are 5 elementary schools in Zeeland and those schools feed into two middle schools, Cityside and Creekside. New Groningen feeds into Creekside Middle School which goes to Zeeland West High School

The status of the 3-5 year school improvement plan (SIP) -New Groningen Elementary has just completed the third year of the school improvement plan in the 2011-12 school year. The New Groningen School Improvement Team has worked hard to look at the data from the State Comprehensive Needs Assessment and decided which areas would be needed to be focused on. This upcoming year staff will focus with students in goal areas of reading comprehension, writing, and math.

The Core Curriculum: Zeeland Public Schools makes sure our students are provided challenging lessons that are consistent across grade levels.  A team of Zeeland educators regularly evaluates and revises our curriculum to ensure classroom lessons meet state requirements for kindergarten through twelfth grade.  Besides a rigorous curriculum, our district has implemented learner goals for all students.  These goals frame what we expect our students to accomplish by the time they graduate from Zeeland Public Schools.  If you have questions about Zeeland Public Schools’ curriculum, please contact us at 616-748-3004 or email Administrative Assistant Alice Chidester.
